Dan Feltes Fourth of July Message, July 4, 2020

Erin and I wish you and your family a very happy, safe, and social distanced 4th of July.

Today, we are reminded of the promise of the words of the Declaration of Independence, on July 4, 1776, that all us are endowed with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit Happiness.

That promise was not always true for so many, and we’ve had a long rocky road in the effort to fulfill those foundational promises of freedom for everyone.

We’ve got so much work to do; to lift each other up, not tear people down, to include more people in our democracy and economy, not exclude them, and to build a future that’s bigger and brighter for everyone, especially our kids.

Erin and I have two amazing daughters, Iris and Josie, who are persons of color. With skin much lighter than theirs, we’ve received comments. It’s not lost on us that they will be treated differently, we worry about that, but, we can only imagine the worry parents of Black children feel - every single day. Every parent wants their children to be safe and to be able to live out their God-given potential. And whether subtle or overt, caught on tape or not, every day our Black brothers and sisters face words, actions, and policies that rob them of the American dream.

It's on all of us to battle systemic racism. It’s on all of us to ensure that the basic promise of freedom extends to everyone. It’s on all of us to build a foundation for an opportunity that’s as strong at the granite under our soil.

I’m reminded of the words of a King that “the moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends toward justice”. Let’s all work to bend that arc, and bend it more quickly.

Our very best to you and your families. Happy 4th everyone.
